Dear Parishioners,

On the feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple we celebrate a mystery of the life of Christ, which is given by the Law of Moses, which prescribed that parents, forty days after the birth of their firstborn, go up to the Temple in Jerusalem to offer their son to the Lord and for the ritual purification of the mother (cf. Ex 13:1-2, 11-16; Lev 12:1-8). Mary and Joseph also fulfill this rite, offering according to the law two turtledoves or two young pigeons.

Reading things more deeply, we understand that at that moment it is God himself who presents his only-begotten Son to men, through the words of the old man Simeon and the prophetess Anna. In fact, Simeon proclaims that Jesus is the "salvation" of humanity, the "light" of all nations and a "sign of contradiction" because he will reveal the intentions of the hearts (cf. Lk 2:29-35). In the East this feast was called Hypapante, the feast of encounter: in fact, Simeon and Anna, who meet Jesus in the Temple and recognize in him the long-awaited Messiah, represent humanity that meets its Lord in the Church. Later this feast also spread to the West, developing above all the symbol of light, and the procession with candles, which gave rise to the term "Candlemas". With this visible sign, the Church wishes to show that in faith the one who is "the light of men" and welcomes him with all the impetus of her faith to bring this "light" to the world.

Therefore, full of trust and gratitude, let us also renew the gesture of the total offering of ourselves by presenting ourselves in the Temple. We approach the Triune holy God, to offer our life and our mission, personal and communal, as men and women consecrated to the kingdom of God. Let us follow our light, which is the risen Christ, to experience His life eternal in us.

Queridos feligreses, 

En la fiesta de la Presentación de Jesús en el Templo celebramos un misterio de la vida de Cristo, que está dado por la Ley de Moisés, que prescribía que los padres, cuarenta días después del nacimiento del primogénito, subieran al Templo de Jerusalén para ofrecer su hijo al Señor y para la purificación ritual de la madre (cf. Ex 13,1-2.11-16; Lv 12,1-8). También María y José cumplen este rito, ofreciendo según la ley dos tórtolas o dos pichones. 

Leyendo las cosas más profundamente, comprendemos que en ese momento es Dios mismo quien presenta a su Hijo Unigénito a los hombres, a través de las palabras del anciano Simeón y de la profetisa Ana. En efecto, Simeón proclama que Jesús es la «salvación» de la humanidad, la «luz» de todos los pueblos y «signo de contradicción» porque revelará las intenciones de los corazones (cf. Lc 2,29-35).  En Oriente esta fiesta se llamaba Hypapante, la fiesta del encuentro: de hecho, Simeón y Ana, que encuentran a Jesús en el Templo y reconocen en él al Mesías esperado, representan a la humanidad que encuentra a su Señor en la Iglesia. Más tarde esta fiesta se difundió también en Occidente, desarrollándose sobre todo el símbolo de la luz y la procesión con velas, de donde surgió el término de “Candelaria”. Con este signo visible, la Iglesia quiere mostrar que en la fe se encuentra Aquel que es “la luz de los hombres” y lo acoge con todo el impulso de su fe para llevar esta “luz” al mundo.

Por eso, llenos de confianza y gratitud, renovemos también nosotros el gesto de la ofrenda total de nosotros mismos presentándonos en el Templo. Nos acercamos al Dios Trino y Santo, para ofrecer nuestra vida y nuestra misión, personal y comunitaria, como hombres y mujeres consagrados al reino de Dios. Sigamos nuestra luz, que es Cristo resucitado, para experimentar su vida eterna en nosotros.

All are invited for a special "Blessing of the Throats" on Monday, February 3rd during the daily mass.

St. Blaise, a bishop and martyr of the 4th century, is remembered for his miraculous healing of a boy choking on a fishbone. His feast day, February 3rd, is traditionally associated with the Blessing of the Throats, invoking his intercession for protection from throat illnesses and other ailments.

Todos están invitados a una "Bendición de las Gargantas" especial el Lunes, 3 de Febrero durante la misa diaria.

San Blas, obispo y mártir del siglo IV, es recordado por su milagrosa curación de un niño que se ahogaba con una espina de pescado.  Su fiesta, el 3 de febrero, se asocia tradicionalmente con la Bendición de las Gargantas, invocando su intercesión para la protección contra las enfermedades de la garganta y otras dolencias.

The 4TH DEGREE KNIGHT’S OF COLUMBUS are having a spaghetti supper on February 7th from 4pm to 7pm at the Columbian Home Event Center. This is a 4th Degree fundraiser and the public is invited. Donations will be accepted for the meal.
